Title: Digital Preservation Storage Criteria Game
Facilitator(s): Cynthia Wu
Description: We propose to share a revision of the Digital Preservation Storage Criteria Game, first played at iPRES 2018. Players will learn about the Criteria (preservation storage considerations for digital material), consider how they are important in different contexts, and practice explaining why they’re important in their context.
This version has new and revised Criteria cards, based on recent work to map the Criteria to relevant international digital preservation and information technology standards.
Game summary:
- The game board is divided into tiles labeled ‘must have’, ‘nice to have’ and ‘can do without’.
- Each player is assigned an organizational role that provides context for considering the relative importance of the criterion, e.g.: ‘You manage an archive with confidential and highly sensitive material’.
- Players select a criterion card and classify it as ‘must have’, ‘nice to have’ or ‘can do without’ and give a reason for the classification. For example, a player classifying encrypted transfer as a ‘must have’ could say: ‘My security policy requires sensitive material to be encrypted in transit, so this is a must-have’. This gives players an opportunity to practice making the case for requirements, as they might have to do within their own organizations.
